Objectives: SPAN 340 Literature of Spain - is a course designed
to familiarize students with the technical vocabulary and the theoretical
principles, which help students to understand and evaluate a literary text.
Analytical reading of selected texts of fiction, poetry, and theater, as well
as the basic understanding of historical development of genres and literary
periods, will be emphasized during the semester.
Text: Aproximaciones al
estudio de la literatura hispana , Quinta Edición by Virgilio
Carmelo. (McGraw-Hill, 2004)
A
novel to be chosen by the student.
Attendance:
An important aspect of this course is
class attendance. It is imperative that absences be kept to a minimum.
Participation: Since this is a literature class where students have
to reflect on the content and the meaning of the works we study, participation
is an important component of the grade.
Course Requirements:
A term-paper (4 - 5 pages) including a bibliography, double
spaced and formatted with standard 1" margins must be submitted a week before the last day of regular classes or
before. This term-paper is on a novel the student has chosen to read. It is a good idea to consult the teacher on
this matter asap.
Oral Presentation: Students will be required to prepare one 10-minute
oral presentation about one of the literary issues studied in class. (Topics
will be assigned.)
Readings: When preparing the readings, students are required to
answer the questions and prepare insightful comments.
Written assignments:
There will be written assignments as we go along. Some will be a comparison between certain
authors, some will be explanatory. They are to be no longer than a page.
Attention will be given to correct spelling grammar and insight.
Movie: We will see the movie of the
play by Garcia Lorca, La casa de Bernarda Alba. There may be another movie, the
title to be discussed.
All grades will be taken in
consideration for the final grade.
