Course Objectives

MUSC 190B is one of the core requirements for the music major.  Upon successful completion of the course, a student will know basic keyboard skills such as pentachords, scales, arpeggios, and chord progressions. Weekly assignments include sight reading, learning new pieces as well as memorizing recital pieces.  Long-term assignments include preparing pieces for performance class.  Skill-level is beginning through intermediate.

Lessons and Absences

You will receive 13 (30-minute) lessons per semester.  Students   must contact me no later than twelve hours before their scheduled lesson if they have a legitimate reason to cancel the lesson, including class trips.  If you do not contact me, or if you contact me fewer than twelve hours before the lesson, the lesson cannot be rescheduled.  Missed lessons are factored into your semester grade.  Lessons will meet every week except for August 25-26, November 24-25, and December 8-9.

Studio Performance Class

You will perform in two studio classes during the semester.  You are required to attend and perform in the mid-term recital on Tuesday, October 27th (Trinity Chapel) as well as the final recital on Thursday, December 10th (Trinity Chapel).  They begin at 6:30PM .

Required Recitals

Your attendance is required in Trinity Chapel for the fall faculty recital.  Date and time TBA.

Honors Auditions and Recital

This recital will be held on November 24th at 7:00pm in Trinity Chapel.  Attendance is encouraged.  Auditions for this recital will be held November 18th.

Practice

You will be expected to practice at least 45 minutes per day.    Schedule a regular daily practice time.  Consistency will yield success.  The practice rooms are available on a first come, first serve basis.  The grand pianos in the chapel, Silber Hall and the Band Room are available for recital preparation.

Materials

Please bring a wide-lined spiral bound notebook (70 pages).  You are urged to purchase a metronome if you don’t already own one.  Repertoire books may be purchased through the bookstore, The Music Mart, or sheetmusicplus.com.  Music may be checked out on a temporary basis from the music library which is located in the piano studio.

Grading

Each of the 13 lessons will be graded and together will count 75% of the semester grade.  Performance class counts 15% of semester grade and attendance at the required recital counts 10% of grade.

90-100% =A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% =C, 60-69% = D, <60% =F
