COMM305 Broadcast Journalism

COMMM 105/305 Broadcast Journalism

Professor Christopher Johnson

Broadcast journalism is made up of a group of Bethany students who meet several times a week to plan, write, edit, and produce broadcasat programs, on campus events and activities, community news and sports and other programs that relate to broadcast journalism.

Broadcast journalism offers our students an educational opportunity. Each week the students spend considerable time planning the production of the program. Then they proceed to write stories and content for the show. They are also required to interview story participants and gather video to be used with their story. Once that is complete, they must edit the material to prepare it for broadcast. Reporters, anchors, writers and technical crew spend several hours working on the creation of one program.

The students involved in the production of BLC News and Sports Programs are gaining educational benefits. Each student involved in the production of BLC News and Sports Programming spends 3-10 hours per program learning and completing their tasks.

In order to receive the credit students involved in Broadcast Journalism are required to:

1.      Actively participate in at least (CM105=7) (CM305=10) programs per semester

2.      CM305: Produce, direct, or write at least 3 segments/shows per semester

3.      Attend all planning meetings unless excused – attendance is taken

4.      Attend show recording when called. Arrive on-time and prepared to go “live”.

          6.   CM305: Create a “demo reel” of stories or programs produced for personal use
